The 2009–10 New York Rangers season is the New York Rangers' 83rd season in the National Hockey League, and the Rangers will attempt qualify for the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. [edit] Off-season On May 4, 2009, Markus Naslund announced that he would be retiring after one season with the Rangers. [1] At the Entry Draft, the Rangers chose Chris Kreider with their first-round pick, 19th overall. The Rangers followed this with a couple of trades at the draft to pick up Brian Boyle and Chad Johnson. A bigger splash was made a few days later when the Rangers traded Scott Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens. With Gomez $7 million contract gone, the Rangers then signed free agent Marian Gaborik on July 1, the first day of free agency. On July 16, the Rangers announced that Mike Sullivan had been hired as an assistant coach.[2] On August 16, 2009, Mark Messier rejoined the New York Rangers organization as a special assistant to GM Glen Sather.[3] [edit] Pre-season | 2009 Pre-season Game Log: 3–3–1 (Home: 2–1–0 ; Road: 1–2–1) | | # | Date | Visitor | Score | Home | OT | Decision | Attendance | Record | Recap | | 1 | September 15 | Boston Bruins | 2 - 1 | New York Rangers | | Zaba | 11,111 | 0-1-0 | [1] | | 2 | September 16 | New York Rangers | 2 - 3 | New Jersey Devils | SO | Johnson | 10,481 | 0-1-1 | [2] | | 3 | September 18 | New York Rangers | 3 - 4 | Detroit Red Wings | | Zaba | 13,180 | 0-2-1 | [3] | | 4 | September 19 | New York Rangers | 5 - 2 | Boston Bruins | | Valiquette | 15,882 | 1-2-1 | [4] | | 5 | September 21 | Detroit Red Wings | 2 - 4 | New York Rangers | | Lundqvist | 11,112 | 2-2-1 | [5] | | 6 | September 24 | Washington Capitals | 2 - 3 | New York Rangers | | Lundqvist | 9,973 | 3-2-1 | [6] | | 7 | September 27 | New York Rangers | 3 - 4 | Washington Capitals | | Lundqvist | | 3-3-1 | [7] | [edit] Regular season [edit] Divisional standings After games of November 29, 2009.[4] Note: GP = Games played; W = Wins; L = Losses; T = Ties; OTL = Overtime loss; GF = Goals for; GA = Goals against; Pts = Points
