SuperLiga 2008, was the second edition of the SuperLiga competition. The top four Major League Soccer teams by point totals at the end of the 2007 season earn qualification.[1] All games of the tournament were broadcast live on Fox Sports World in Canada (English), Telefutura in the United States (Spanish) and Televisa and TV Azteca in Mexico (both Spanish).
[edit] Qualification
The eight teams in the 2008 edition were selected based on qualification rules set by their respective leagues. The SuperLiga 2008 contestants were:[2]
From
Major League Soccer[3]
From
La Primera División
[edit] Group stage
The competition consisted of an initial group stage with the top two teams from each groups advancing to the semifinals.
[edit] Tie-breaking criteria
If two teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:[4]
- Head-to-Head Results (points only)
- Goal Differential
- Goals Scored
- Coin Toss
In the event that three or more teams are equal on points and no one team has defeated the other two (Head-to-Head Results), then the remaining tiebreakers are employed to advance a single team. The tiebreakers are applied again between the teams that failed to advance if it is necessary to determine a second-place team.
If the tiebreakers fail to advance a single team, the tiebreakers are then used to eliminate one of the three teams.
