Serena Williams was the defending champion, but lost in the third round to Daniela Hantuchová.
Amélie Mauresmo, the third seed, ultimately won the tournament, her first major championship. Her finals opponent, eighth-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne, retired down 2-0 in the second set, already down a set. Henin was suffering from stomach cramps resulting from the accidental misuse of anti-inflammatories for a chronic shoulder injury.
Mauresmo and Henin would have a rematch in the Final of Wimbledon, where Mauresmo would win in three sets.
