Defending champion Justine Henin was not competing, and thus did not defend her title. Instead, seventh-seeded Serena Williams of the United States defeated top-seeded Lindsay Davenport, also of the United States, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, to win the Women's Singles title at the 2005 Australian Open.
