Contents

[edit] Cancellation

This championship was planned to be the second edition after the inaugural competition which was held in Brazil the year before. This time, Spain was chosen to be the venue. However, due to the bankruptcy of ISL, a Swiss FIFA partner, this event was never realised.

On 18 May 2001, FIFA announced the tournament would be postponed to 2003, citing 3 reasons: national and international fixtures, economic problems of some of the participants' home countries and, crucially, the financial problems of ISL Worldwide, FIFA's marketing partner, which is factually bankrupt. The 2003 edition was never held.

Consequently, the second edition of the FIFA Club World Championship was postponed to 2005, in Japan.
