1990s in music:
For a history of music in all times, go to Timeline of musical events.

The decade of the 1990s were possibly the most diverse period of pop music in history. Starting soon after the 1980s ended (1991), musical trends quickly shifted from the 1980s standards, most notably the shift from synthpop to House music from the years 1989 to 1991, the replacement of hair metal and classic rock with alternative rock and Grunge, and the popularity of Gangsta rap and the dominance of hip hop in general starting in the early 1990s, as well as the rise of boybands and teen pop towards the end of the decade and into the early 2000s.

Over 700 years ago in Japan, Zen masters developed honkyku, the art of "blowing Zen," using only the pure tones of the simple shakuhachi bamboo flute for accompaniment. On Shakuhachi Meditation Music, virtuoso Stan Richardson offers 13 authentic bamboo flute selections, each one a soothing contemplation meant to still the mind and awaken attention. Richardson, a former member of Japan's respected Ki-Sui-An Shakuhachi Dj ensemble, plays these rare works in the traditional Zen style, just as they were played for centuries by wandering monks. Selections range from spare, haunting contemplations to complex tone poems. Excellent for meditation, yoga, exercise, and bodywork.

Sample Track: Track 8 Play MP3 sample "Halpern's peaceful compositions feature keyboards, flute...and a subtle pulse attuned to the rhythm of a long, yogic breath. Composed in a deeply relaxed and meditative state, the music strikes a resonant chord in each of us as we tune in to our true nature."- Innerpeacemusic.com "Halpern's music is a very powerful tool for anyone who is looking to deepen his or her experience of yoga. It provides you with an external healing sound that leads you gently inward, anchoring you into the moment at hand. As you listen, you feel connected with your innermost being, and your yoga practice becomes like a meditation in motion." Baron Baptiste: Founder, Baptiste Power Yoga Training Center, Cambridge, MA
