The inaugural World Club Challenge was actually an unofficial trial of the concept, with NSWRFL season 1975 premiers, Eastern Suburbs playing against 1975-76 Rugby Football League season champions St Helens. The match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the 29th of June, 1976.
