The 1968 Fireball 300 was a 150-mile (241.4 kilometer) NASCAR Grand National race that had 27 American and one Canadian competitor (Frog Fagan).[1] The race lasted one hour and fifty-nine minutes over a .500 mile paved oval track (with 300 laps completed).[1] The top ten drivers of the day were: David Pearson (winner), Bobby Isaac, Richard Petty, James Hylton, Elmo Langley, Clyde Lynn, Jabe Thomas, Frog Fagan, Henley Gray, and Stan Meserve.[1] There were 6 caution for 45 laps and the margin of victory was more than 2 laps.[1] The average speed of the race was 75.167 miles per hour while the pole speed was 89.708 miles per hour.[1] 7800 people attended this race that took place on May 5, 1968 at the Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in Weaverville, North Carolina.[1] Out of 28 competitors, only 10 managed to finish all 300 laps of the race.[1] Total winnings for this race was $6900 ($42,260.84 in today's money).[2] David Pearson officially led 299 out of the 300 laps;[2] making him the dominant driver in the race.
