• February 24 – In London, played another unofficial match England which defeat Scotland 1-0.
• March 16 – England: Inaugural FA Cup Final: Wanderers beat Royal Engineers 1–0 at the Kennington Oval (see also: FA Cup 1871-72)
• November 30 – The first international match is played: Scotland and England draw 0-0 at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow, with attendance 4,000.

• Wrexham A.F.C., the first Welsh football club are founded on September 28, formed by two members of the Wrexham Cricket Club, who wanted a sporting activity for the winter months, during a meeting held at the Turf Hotel in Wrexham.
• Le Havre AC, the first French football and rugby club, began playing football on a regular basis in 1894
