The 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an Infantry Regiment that served in the United States Army during the American Civil War. It was often referred to as the "17th New York Veteran Zouaves."
[edit] Military Service, 1863The regiment was organized in New York City, New York, from June to October 1863, with elements of the 9th (Hawkins Zouaves), 11th (Ellsworths Zouaves), 17th, & 38th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments. The Regiment was mustered into United States service on October 18, 1863, in New York City for three years service with 900 Officers and Men under the command of Colonel William Thomas Campbell Grower, formerly the Major of the 17th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. [edit] Military Service, 1864[edit] Military Service, 1865The regiment was mustered out of service on June 13, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Lake, with less than 200 Officers and Men. Representatives as you are of the great city of New York, your association with the men of the northwest, composing the balance of the brigade, has been of the most pleasing and genial kind." “Few Regiments sent from our State, if any, experienced as much severe service as the Seventeenth New York Veteran Volunteers. Enlisted on May 3, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service; mustered into service as Captain of Company G of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 4, 1861; promoted to Major on February 14, 1862; wounded in action on April 19, 1862, at Camden, North Carolina; mustered out of service with the Regiment on May 20, 1863, at New York City, New York. Appointed as Colonel of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 29, 1863, for three years service; seriously wounded in the thigh on July 17, 1863, at New York City, New York, during the Draft Riots; mustered out of service on October 14, 1863, at New York City, New York. Enrolled and is mustered into service as Lieutenant Colonel of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 17, 1863, at Albany, New York, for three years service; granted a ten-day leave of absence on account of physical disability on May 9, 1864; honorably discharged on May 10, 1864, to accept an appointment. Appointed as Captain of the 4th Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, to date from May 3, 1864; resigns his commission in the Veteran Reserve Corps on April 12, 1866. Enrolled and is mustered into service as Captain of Company G on October 17, 1863, at Albany, New York, for three years service; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on January 4, 1865; wounded in action on March 16, 1865, at Averysboro, North Carolina, and was sent to Hospital in Goldsboro, North Carolina; promoted to Colonel on January 24, 1865, but was never mustered into service as such; mustered out of service with the Regiment on July 13, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.

Enrolled on May 3, 1861, at Norwich, New York, for two years service; mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Company H of the 17th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 24, 1861; promoted to Captain on October 24, 1861; wounded in action on August 30, 1862, at Second Manassas, Virginia; dismissed on February 22, 1863. Enlisted on June 9, 1863, in New York City, New York, for three years service; mustered into service as First Lieutenant & Regimental Adjutant of 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 10, 1863; mustered into service as Major of the Regiment on October 16, 1863; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to date from September 1, 1864; discharged on January 4, 1865, per Special Order No. 2, Headquarters, Left Wing, Army of Georgia. [Born in McDounough, New York, no date; at the time of his enlistment he was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, a light complexion, was 5 ft. 7 in. tall, and was employed as a Lawyer.]

Enlisted on April 23, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service at the age of 21; mustered into service as First Sergeant of Company D of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 4, 1861; promoted to Second Lieutenant of Company B on June 3, 1862; transferred to Company D on November 22, 1862; promoted to First Lieutenant on March 4, 1863; transferred to Company A on March 17, 1863; mustered out of service with the Company on May 20, 1863, at New York City, New York. Enrolled and is mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Company D of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1863, at Albany, New York, for three years service; promoted to Captain on August 29, 1863; transferred to Company H of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14, 1863; promoted to Major on May 30, 1865, but was not mustered into service as such; mustered out of service with the Company on July 13, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.
