• Frederick II ascended the Prussian throne upon the death of his father, Frederick William I.
• Frederick II then invaded the Austrian province of Silesia, more or less starting the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748).
• Bonnie Prince Charlie captured Edinburgh. This prompted the singing of the original version of God Save the Queen (at the time, it was God Save the King) in England as a rallying cry to defeat Bonnie Prince Charlie.
