.il is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Israel. It is administered by the Israel Internet Association.

The .il top-level domain is one of the earliest registered ccTLDs. When Israel registered it, on 24 October 1985[1], it was the third registration of any ccTLD, after .us and .uk, which were registered earlier that year.

[edit] Censorship in the United Arab Emirates

Etisalat, the ISP of the United Arab Emirates, blocked all websites in the .il TLD [2] (the Israeli top-level domain) until November 2009 when most .il domains became available. [3]

It also prohibits the registration of .ae domain names by Israelis:

2. Any Israeli individual or entity shall not be eligible for the registration of domain name(s) under .ae. The UAEnic shall have the right to remove any domain name which the Israeli Boycott Office Rules and Regulations in the UAE decide that it is similar or identical to an Israeli's, or any Intellectual Property Right belonging to person(s) under an interdict by virtue of a decision to that effect[4]
