Étienne Capoue (born 11 July 1988 in Niort) is a French professional footballer of Guadeloupean descent who currently plays for Toulouse FC in Ligue 1. He is the younger brother of FC Nantes player Aurélien Capoue. Étienne can play as either a defender or a holding midfielder and currently serves as captain of the France U-21 national team.
[edit] Career[edit] Early careerÉtienne began his career playing for his hometown club, Chamois Niortais. He spent another two years at another local club in the Deux-Sèvres department[1], before joining Angers SCO in 2003. While at Angers, his performances with the youth teams caught the attention of several Ligue 1 clubs, notably Lille and Bordeaux, however he eventually joined Toulouse after the club offered him a one-week trial. He was signed to a youth contract and joined in 2005. [edit] Toulouse FCÉtienne started off with the under-18 team in 2006 and, the following season, joined the CFA squad making eight appearances. Halfway through the 2007–08 season, he was called up to the senior squad by manager Alain Casanova. He made his league debut on 8 December 2007 in a 1–0 victory over Lille appearing as a substitute.[2]He made his first start the following week against Paris Saint-Germain playing 71 minutes in a 2–1 victory.[3]He also made one appearance in the club's UEFA Cup run that season against Russian club Spartak Moscow in a 2–1 victory. On 7 February 2008, along with teammate and friend Cheikh M'Bengue, Étienne signed his first professional contract agreeing to a three year deal.[4] For the 2008–09 season, he was given a more permanent role in the squad and flourished making 36 total appearances and scoring one goal, his first ever, against Bordeaux in a 1–2 loss.[5] He also received a staggering 14 yellow cards in all competitions during the season. For his efforts, he was nominated for the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and awarded a contract extension until the year 2013.[6] [edit] International careerÉtienne has been active with France's youth teams first appearing with the under-16 squad. He made his U-21 debut on 19 November 2008 against Denmark in a 1–0 victory. Since his debut, he has served as captain of the squad and will likely lead the squad into the upcoming 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. He was named to the Guadeloupe national football team preliminary squad to participate in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, however he didn't make the final squad due to his parent club's objection. His call up and participation would have not hindered future selections from France for Capoue as they are not a member of FIFA. [edit] Career statisticsAs of 3 August 2009
