Ávvir is a Northern Sámi language newspaper that is the result of the merger between two Northern Sámi newspapers: Min Áigi og Áššu. Although Ávvir is currently published three times a week, plans have been made to publish it 4–5 times a week in the future, i.e., from Tuesday to Saturday. The first edition of Ávvir was published on Sami National Day, i.e., February 6, 2008[1] The newspaper's offices are located in Kárášjohka and Kautokeino.

The word ávvir means 'care' or 'attention' in Northern Sámi[2] . The name was proposed by Laila Susanne Vars of Láhpoluoppal in Kautokeino.
